Close collaboration can lead to great innovations

BAADER Salmon Gutting Machine – Now Also for Farmed Cod!

Another example of solutions on demand and good customer collaboration is a project initiated by our customer Hofseth and the company Ode to slaughter farmed cod on a BAADER 142 salmon gutting machine. BAADER took up the challenge and developed a solution with valuable input from the customer. As a result of this collaboration Hofseth Processing AS has ordered three rebuilding kits for their existing BAADER 142 gutting machines.

Øystein Giske, site director and Idar Olsen, technical manager at Hofseth Processing AS and Kjetil Skarbø, Service Manager, BAADER Norge AS are happy for the order and new solution.

“After operating the test machine for some weeks, we are very pleased with the gutting performance. The liver is whole. We save manual operating hours and become more efficient.”, says Øystein Giske and Idar Olsen.

Where we came from

The history of farmed cod in Norway is relatively recent compared to other forms of aquaculture. While cod has been a vital part of Norwegian fisheries for centuries, the commercial farming of cod began to gain traction because of the need for sustainable seafood sources.

Today, farmed cod is on the way to become an integral part of Norway's aquaculture sector, alongside salmon and other species.

Currently, Cod gutting is a manual operation, which will be challenging when the volume increases. Hofseth has multiple BAADER gutting machines in their plant – currently processing trout and salmon. Many were excited to see if we could industrialise the slaughter process even for cod in their existing production line. After some months, our combined knowledge and development effort brought a new solution to the market.

What we did

In 2023, BAADER tested, adapted, and programmed the BAADER 142 - originally designed for salmon and sea trout - to process farmed cod as well. The upgraded BAADER 142 can now switch between salmon, trout, and cod with a simple switch. Additionally, the operator can choose between a princess cut or a fully open belly cut for gutting cod.

This cutting method ensures that no viscera is damaged, allowing for the safe removal of valuable by-products such as the liver. This process maximises the utilisation of valuable by-products.

A conversion kit with hardware and software upgrade is available to upgrade your existing machine. The machine can operate at maximum capacity for all three species, and the new solutions have made the operation even more stable for salmon and trout. This is a win-win-win situation!

BAADER experts tested and tuned the BAADER 142 machine.

Collaboration is the key to success

According to Per Ivar Roald, Business Development Manager at BAADER Norge, this development was made with valuable inputs from the companies Ode and Hofseth. Ode is a cod farmer in Norway supplying the Hofseth with cod for their processing facility in Ålesund.

As a result of this collaboration Hofseth Processing AS has ordered three rebuilding kits for their existing BAADER 142 gutting machines. The machines are used for salmon and trout, but the kits will allow them now also to operate on farmed cod as well.
